River Wye
March 7th
It's been a long time waiting, but today I was back on my beloved River Wye. I had been out the country for three weeks, and before that there was the cold snap and the river had been high.
So it was a relief as well as a pleasure to reacquaint myself with running water. I decided to return to Abernant, as on my first visit the river had had the better of it. Abernant has a bed of gravel for the most part, which makes wading relatively easy. The weather was much better this time, no freezing in the rod rings, but hardly tropical. The water was 42F and a little high, but, importantly, it was clear. I fished a couple of nymphs under a dry fly. A lovely brown trout was the first fish tempted. It was a decent size and the first trout of the season from the Wye.
After such a fine start there was the inevitable lull before I found where the grayling were hiding. Three delightful grayling were fooled by the nymphs; perhaps the last grayling before the close of the season? Plas Gwyn, the upper beat, delivered a lovely trout, only slightly smaller than the first. This beat is also easy wading and with a character all of its own. It was splendid to be back on the river. I look forward to many more visits to come.
